Aspirus is pleased to welcome back Zuhair Ghanem, MD, to its expert oncology team, expanding care services for the Western Upper Peninsula. Dr. Ghanem joins oncology advanced practice clinicians Audrea Williams, PA-C, and Heather Nyman, APNP, and will be seeing patients at Aspirus Ironwood and Aspirus Keweenaw Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Ghanem specializes in all aspects of oncology and hematology and is the area’s only certified hematologist. Hematology involves the study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases. Hemophilia is a common disorder treated by hematologists. Blood diseases include malignancies such as lymphoma and leukemia.
Dr. Ghanem is Board-certified in medical oncology, hematology, geriatric medicine and internal medicine. He completed his advanced fellowship training in hematology and medical oncology at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and his internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine/St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey.
Dr. Ghanem and his team will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including clinic and infusion nursing staff; advanced diagnostic lab and imaging; and a fully integrated pharmacy. This ensures patients receive the highest level of oncology care close to home. When needed, patients also have access to the most advanced technology, specialty cancer care and advanced cancer research and clinical trials.
“Dr. Ghanem is a strong addition to our comprehensive cancer care team and will be helping us to advance oncology services,” said Jonathan Bruggeman, DPM, MHSA, Aspirus Upper Peninsula Regional Medical Director. “His comprehensive knowledge and expertise will allow us to lead the health of the community in diagnosis and treatment of cancers and blood disorders.”
A familiar face at Aspirus and in the Upper Peninsula, Dr. Ghanem served as an Aspirus Medical Oncologist from 2011-2014 and as the Aspirus U.P. Regional Director of Oncology and Hematology from 2016-2020.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Ghanem returning to help us increase collaboration and coverage in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including chemotherapy, surgical oncology and radiation oncology when needed,” said Chris Harff, Aspirus Upper Peninsula Regional President.
Dr. Ghanem returns to Aspirus after practicing as Director Murray-Calloway County Cancer Center in Murray, Kentucky, for the past few years.
“I’m excited to be back caring for the genuine people of the Upper Peninsula,” Dr. Ghanem said. “I have missed everyone and am eager to participate in the care of the community.”
Dr. Ghanem begins seeing patients in late August. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Aspirus Keweenaw at 906-337-6560 or Aspirus Ironwood at 906-932-1500.
