Aspirus Keweenaw Now Offering Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.) Rehabilitation Program

Aspirus Keweenaw is proud to announce the launch of its new Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.) Rehabilitation Program, offering comprehensive care for individuals suffering from this common and often debilitating condition. This outpatient, supervised program is specifically designed to help individuals improve their ability to walk, perform daily activities, and manage the symptoms of P.A.D., which can include muscle aches, slow-healing foot sores, and poor circulation.

P.A.D. occurs when the arteries in the legs and other parts of the body narrow, limiting blood flow to the muscles. The program's goal is to help patients slow the progression of the disease, reduce symptoms, and enhance overall quality of life.

"We’re excited to offer this specialized rehabilitation program to our community," said Andrew Meverden, Team Lead, Exercise Physiologist at Aspirus Keweenaw. "Peripheral Artery Disease can severely impact a person’s mobility and daily life, but through tailored exercise and education, we can help people regain their independence, improve their health, and slow the progression of the disease."

The P.A.D. Rehabilitation Program includes individualized exercise plans, monitored by a team of skilled professionals, to help patients safely improve their cardiovascular health. Participants will engage in treadmill exercises and other activities on equipment such as leg ergometers, ellipticals, Nustep recumbent bikes, arm ergometers, dumbbells, and Therabands. The program offers up to 36 sessions held three times per week.

Key Program Goals Include:

  • Improved ability to walk
  • Improved ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Lifestyle changes to slow down the progression of P.A.D.

In addition to physical exercise, the program offers a classroom education component, available on both an individual and group basis. Participants will learn essential lifestyle changes, including:

  • Nutrition
  • Risk factors
  • Exercise strategies
  • Weight loss techniques
  • Stress management
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Individualized education on P.A.D.

The P.A.D. Rehabilitation Program is offered at two convenient locations including Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Aspirus Houghton Clinic.
