Stevens Point, Wis. – Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common but serious heart condition that significantly increases the risk of stroke and heart failure if left untreated. Symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness can impact your ability to stay active and diminish your quality of life.
To help individuals better understand and manage this condition, Aspirus Heart Care is hosting a free seminar on Wednesday, May 7th. The event will cover the relationship between AFib, stroke, and heart failure, as well as the innovative treatment options available through Aspirus Heart Care.
The seminar will take place at The Holiday Inn Conference Center in Stevens Point from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. While the event is free, registration is requested.
Aspirus Heart Care specialists John Johnkoski, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Andrew Mykytsey, MD, Electrophysiologist, will provide insights into managing AFib. Topics include traditional and minimally invasive approaches, catheter-based ablation techniques, and combined treatments that aim to reduce symptoms, prevent strokes, and improve quality of life.
“Atrial fibrillation not only disrupts normal heart rhythm but also significantly increases the risk of life-threatening complications like stroke and heart failure,” said Dr. Johnkoski. “For patients with AFib, the risk of stroke is approximately five times higher than for those with normal heart rhythms.”
“AFib arises from irregularities in the heart’s electrical signals, and timely diagnosis is crucial,” added Dr. Mykytsey. “Without proper management, prolonged episodes can lead to permanent changes in heart tissue and electrical function, making treatment more challenging. Early intervention is key to preserving heart health and preventing progression.”
