Aspirus to buy buildings, land from Liberty Mutual in Wausau

Liberty Mutual to continue Wausau operations in space leased from Aspirus

WAUSAU, WI. – Today, Aspirus and Liberty Mutual Insurance completed a real estate transaction with Aspirus purchasing four buildings and about 40 acres of land from Liberty Mutual. The property will become part of the Aspirus medical campus in Wausau and will provide the Wausau-based health care system with much-needed expansion space.

Liberty MutualLiberty Mutual, which began operations in Wisconsin in 1919, will continue to maintain its employee presence in Wausau by leasing space on the property from Aspirus. 

“Liberty Mutual is a great partner and a tremendous Wausau asset,” Aspirus President and CEO Matthew F. Heywood said. “I’m glad we could come to an agreement that will accommodate both companies’ future needs.” 

Liberty Mutual noted it will continue its operations in Wausau, leasing space from the health care provider.  “Aspirus is such a valuable member of the Wausau community and we are delighted to come to an agreement that is beneficial to both parties,” said Kris Opal, Office Operations Manager for Liberty Mutual’s Wausau location. “Liberty Mutual looks forward to continuing our operations in Wausau as well as keeping our long-standing presence in the community.”

Liberty Mutual has nearly 900 employees working in its Wausau office who perform various insurance operations.  Liberty also has nearly 200 employees working in offices located in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison, Waukesha and Appleton.

Aspirus will focus its expansion plans on Building 1, the southernmost structure on the property, which will be remodeled and converted into corporate offices.

Building 4, the northernmost structure on the property, is a utility plant providing heating, cooling, water and electricity to the other three buildings.
