Community Sharps and Medication Disposal Program Launched

Aspirus Iron River Hospital and Clinics and the Iron Area Health Foundation (IAHF) have partnered to create a new Sharps and Medication Disposal Program aimed at promoting the safe disposal of unused syringes, needles, and medications in Iron River, Crystal Falls, and surrounding communities. This collaborative initiative provides convenient drop-off points for both sharps and medications, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents across the region.

The new Sharps Disposal Containers will be placed at two key locations, including the main entrance at Aspirus Crytal Falls Clinic and Aspirus Iron River Hospital, giving community members easy access to proper disposal sites for syringes, needles and other sharp objects.

Medication Drop Boxes are located at the Iron River Police department and the Iron County Sheriff's Department in Crystal Falls offering safe disposal options for unused or expired medications.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with the Iron Area Health Foundation to bring this important initiative to our community,” said Taylor Taylor, Director of Nursing for Aspirus Iron River. “The health and safety of our community is our top priority, and this program ensures that individuals have a responsible way to dispose of both sharp objects and medications in safe, accessible locations.”

This program is designed to address the growing need for safe disposal options that protect individuals, families, and the broader community. Properly disposing of syringes, needles, and medications is essential to prevent accidental needle-stick injuries, the transmission of infectious diseases, and environmental contamination.

“We’re proud to partner with Aspirus Health on this critical project,” said Lyle Smithson Jr., Executive Director for the Iron Area Health Foundation. “By providing these disposal stations, we’re helping to prevent accidents, reduce misuse, and keep our community healthier. The collaboration between our two organizations highlights the strength of local partnerships in addressing public health issues.”

This Sharps and Medication Disposal Program is part of both organizations' ongoing commitment to improving public health and safety within the region. It reflects a shared goal of providing accessible, sustainable healthcare solutions for all, ensuring that residents have responsible ways to dispose of potentially hazardous items that can impact both individual and community well-being.

“We are excited about this collaboration because it provides a much-needed service that directly supports the well-being of our neighbors and visitors,” said Scott Kataja, Manager - Nursing at Aspirus Iron River. “Through partnerships like this one, we are better able to address vital health concerns and ensure our community remains safe, healthy, and prepared for the future.”
