Our speech-language pathologists can help with all of these conditions. Our therapists work with patients while they are in the hospital as well as on an outpatient basis, helping them regain their speech, language, cognitive or swallowing skills.
Our speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat the following:
- Speech—verbal means of communicating
- Articulation: how speech sounds are made
- Fluency: rhythm of speech
- Voice: use of the vocal folds and breathing to produce sounds
- Language—how we understand and express our needs, feelings and ideas
- Receptive language: ability to comprehend language, both auditory and written
- Expressive language: ability to express self verbally, in writing and nonverbally
- Augmentative communication: other ways of communicating if verbal skills are impaired
- Cognition—thought process for interpreting and communicating needs, feelings and ideas
- Attention: ability to stay on task or divide/alternate between tasks

Our specialty programs/assessments for swallowing include:
- The use of VitalStim—Neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the muscles of swallowing, used in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy
- Video fluoroscopic swallow evaluation—Noninvasive x-ray of the swallowing mechanism, performed in Riverview’s Imaging Services Department
