Jessica Harju, OTR/L, ATC, CLT, an occupational therapist at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics, has recently earned her certification in lymphedema therapy.
This certification signifies Harju as having specialized skills in treating patients with lymphedema. Lymphedema is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the accumulation of protein-rich fluids that lead to swelling, commonly in the arms or legs. It can be categorized into primary and secondary forms. Primary lymphedema can be congenital, meaning individuals may be born with it, while secondary lymphedema often arises when the lymphatic system is compromised due to factors such as injury, surgery, or disease. Additionally, Harju is equipped to address related conditions such as venous edema and lipedema, which can complicate diagnosis and treatment.
“Lymphedema can manifest in various areas of the body,” Harju said. “Symptoms typically include persistent swelling in the limbs, feelings of heaviness or tightness, reduced flexibility, and skin discomfort, which can even make it challenging to wear certain clothes.”
The condition is particularly common following surgeries or due to factors such as cancer treatment, trauma, or falls. Early intervention is crucial; the sooner treatment begins, the more effective it can be.
“Adding this certification to our team is vital,” said Dave Callaghan, Manager of Outpatient Therapies. “It enhances our ability to provide comprehensive care and address a condition that can severely impact a patient's quality of life.”
Lymphedema is a lifelong concern; without proper management, it can lead to serious complications, including recurrent infections, non-healing wounds, and emotional distress.
“I’m thrilled to bring this specialized care to our community,” said Harju. “Being able to treat patients with lymphedema close to home means we can provide personalized support and help them manage this condition effectively.”
