Keweenaw Health Foundation Donates $25,000 to Address Local Childcare Crisis

In a major step forward for local childcare services, the Keweenaw Health Foundation (KHF) has announced a $25,000 donation to Calumet, Laurium, Keweenaw (CLK) Schools Childcare. This generous contribution aims to address the ongoing childcare crisis affecting families across the country and provide crucial support to the local community.

The donation comes at a critical time, as many families struggle to find affordable and reliable childcare solutions. With the additional funds, CLK Schools Childcare will be able to expand its services significantly. This includes increasing the number of children and families served, extending operational hours and support the recruitment and retention of staff, ensuring that the center can maintain its high standards of care. By doing so, CLK Schools Childcare will not only enhance the breadth and flexibility of its services but also provide greater access to quality care for more families in the community.

“Access to quality childcare is fundamental for working parents in the community,” said Joel Asiala, Superintendent of Calumet, Laurium, and Keweenaw Public Schools. “The Keweenaw Health Foundation’s donation is a game-changer. This donation will substantially help us offset costs, allow us to recruit and retain high quality staff, offer competitive wages, and maximize our capacity to serve more children. This support not only enhances the excellence of care we can provide but also ensures that families have reliable and high standard options for children.”

The sizeable contribution underscores a growing recognition of the essential role childcare plays in the well-being of families and the broader community. By investing in local childcare services, the foundation is taking a proactive step toward addressing a key challenge faced by many working parents.

“Our mission at the Keweenaw Health Foundation is to foster a thriving, healthy community,” said Jenn Jenich -Laplander, Executive Director of the Keweenaw Health Foundation. “As a mother who relies on childcare to balance work and family life, I understand firsthand how critical these services are. We are excited to partner with CLK Schools to address this pressing issue. Our donation will help alleviate some of the financial pressures on the center, allowing them to focus on what they do best – providing excellent childcare for our local children.”

The KHF encourages other organizations and businesses whose staff struggle with childcare to consider contributing to this vital cause. By joining efforts to support local childcare services, you can help ensure that working parents have access to the reliable and high-quality care they need, creating a positive impact on both your employees and the community at large.
