Aspirus Health Urges Motorcycle Safety Ahead of Tomahawk’s 43rd Annual Fall Ride

9/12/2024
As thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts prepare to gather for the 43rd annual Fall Ride this weekend in Tomahawk, Aspirus Health is reminding riders and drivers alike of the importance of motorcycle safety. While the Fall Ride is a beloved tradition, the influx of motorcycles on the road has historically led to an increase in trauma cases in hospitals across the region.

"Last year trauma volumes were down, but the weather was poor," said Stephanie Dulak, RN, Aspirus Wausau Hospital Emergency Department Manager. "This year, we expect decent weather, which could lead to more people on the road. While we want everyone to enjoy the ride, we also need to emphasize the importance of safety."

The Aspirus Wausau Hospital (AWH) trauma team treated eleven patients injured in motorcycle crashes during the weekend of the Tomahawk Fall Ride in 2023.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 22 times more likely to die in a crash than passenger vehicle occupants. Helmet use remains one of the most effective ways to prevent fatalities, reducing the risk of death by 37 percent. In 2022, DOT-compliant helmet use was 67 percent, underscoring the importance of wearing proper protective gear.

"Be safe. Wear a helmet," said Dulak. "It’s about protecting your life."

Aspirus Health also encourages all drivers to be vigilant, especially during large events like the Fall Ride, when motorcycles will be more prevalent on the roads. Motorcycles are smaller, making them harder to see, and their speed can be difficult to judge, which can lead to accidents. Drivers are urged to give riders extra space and double-check blind spots before making turns or changing lanes.

As the gateway to the Northwoods, Tomahawk offers beautiful scenery and winding roads that appeal to motorcyclists from across the country. Aspirus Health wants to ensure that all participants have a fun and safe weekend, free of injury.
