National Nutrition
Month serves as a time to acknowledge the journey toward healthier eating
habits. This year's theme, "Beyond the Table," encourages us to think
about where our food comes from and how it affects our bodies.
"We want to
know where our food is sourced from, how it's grown, and how it gets to our
plate,” says Beth Cook, Aspirus Registered Dietitian. “By supporting local
farmers and understanding our food's journey, we can make better choices
for ourselves and the
planet."
However, let's face
it – eating healthily isn't always easy. Many people struggle to enjoy
vegetables or find nutritious foods that fit in their budget. That’s where the
role of the registered dietitian comes in. Cook helps patients find practical
solutions, like adding vegetables to favorite dishes or trying new cooking
methods.
Her top tip? Start
small.
"Set realistic
goals," she suggests. "Even adding an apple to your afternoon snack
can make a big difference."
Making small changes
gradually adds up and can significantly improve our health. Cook adds, “The
benefits of healthy eating are huge – from lowering blood pressure to reducing
the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease.”
Cook acknowledges
that navigating the world of healthy eating can be overwhelming, so she
encourages people to take it one day at a time. "Be kind to
yourself," she says. "And don't hesitate to reach out for support if
you need it."
As we recognize
National Nutrition Month, let's embrace the chance to nourish our bodies,
listen to our cravings, and make choices that support our well-being.
If you're looking
for help with your diet, start by talking to your primary care clinician. They
