Avoid Dangerous Alcohol-Medication Interactions

As Thanksgiving
approaches, many look forward to gathering with loved ones to celebrate
gratitude, warmth, and togetherness. But for some, the holiday also brings
“Blackout Wednesday”—a night notorious
for heavy drinking that can quickly turn risky, particularly for those
taking prescription or over-the-counter medications.
"Mixing alcohol
with certain medications can lead to dangerous side effects, such as dizziness,
overdose, and even liver damage," said Stetson Potrykus, Aspirus Pharmacy
Resident. "Common medications to avoid include painkillers, anti-anxiety
medications, and over-the-counter drugs like Tylenol."
With alcohol
consumption on the rise during the holidays, it’s important to be aware of the
added risks.
“It’s riskier
because people often drink more than they normally would this time of year,”
Potrykus explained. “These interactions can be more harmful than you think.”
Aspirus Health urges
everyone to take a moment to learn how alcohol may interact with their
medications.
"If you're
unsure whether alcohol interacts with your medications, it’s safest to avoid
it," Potrykus advised. "Your pharmacist or health care provider can
help guide you in making safe choices and avoid serious health risks."
A little preparation
can go a long way. Take the time to read medication labels, moderate your
alcohol intake, and plan for a designated driver. These simple steps can help
you enjoy Thanksgiving— a time for connection, joy, and, most importantly, good
health.
